I believe that the new composition of the European Parliament and the new president of the European Commission will maintain the continuity of the policy of supporting the process of EU enlargement to the countries of the region and the Republic of Macedonia.

This was said by the Prime Minister and VMRO – DPMNE leader Nikola Gruevski last night in his speech at the congress of the European People’s Party, held in Dublin, Ireland, attended by 2,000 participants, over 800 delegates with right to voting and 12 heads of governments of EU member states.

– Macedonian Government implements profound political and economic reforms, which are aimed at meeting the necessary criteria for membership in the European Union, improving the standard of living and quality of life of the Macedonian people, as well as strengthening the capacity of Macedonian institutions, Gruevski said.

He expressed hope that the five subsequent recommendations of the European Commission to start accession negotiations with Macedonia, based on the results of the reforms and the degree of fulfillment of the Copenhagen criteria will be materialized with the proper decision of the European Council, noting that the European People’s Party support on achieving this goal is crucial for Macedonia.

The Prime Minister touched on the upcoming European Parliament elections as the main theme of the congress of the European People’s Party. Moreover, he expressed the conviction that the candidate of the European People’s Party for President of the European Commission will be the right political figure that represents the interests of European citizens and that will fully exert its political and personal integrity in the strengthening of the European project and the current challenges.

During yesterday’s EPP Congress, Joseph Daul was confirmed to be the choice for President of the European People’s Party. Daul replaces Wilfried Martens, who died last year. Congress adopted the EPP Action Programme 2014 – 2019 and many other resolutions and declarations.

Congress continues its work today and the candidate for the European People’s Party for President of the European Commission is expected to be elected.

The MAcedonian delegation consists of the Executive Committee members of VMRO – DPMNE Martin Protogjer, Vlatko Gjorchev and Nikola Poposki- the current head of the Macedonian diplomacy.
