Esma Redzepova awarded with title National Artist to the Republic of Macedonia

President Gjorge Ivanov Friday awarded the famous singer and humanitarian Esma Redzepova-Teodosievska with title “National Artist to the Republic of Macedonia.”

The “National Artist” title is the highest recognition presented to significant artists for their contribution for affirmation of the Macedonia’s culture in the world. Esma has been performing for 55 years and the title is presented for her humanitarian work and improvement of the social life of the Roma since she and her late husband Stevo Teodosievski took care for 47 homeless Roma children.

President Ivanov awarding the title to Esma said that the recognition is a gratitude for her mission as great artist and country’s cultural ambassador.

Esma’s music is the music of Macedonia, of our multi-ethnic, multi-lingual and multi-religious society. It is the music that connects us. Engagement in improvement of the economic and social situation of the Roma, she becomes the symbol of entire Roma community as inseparable part of the Macedonian society, Ivanov said.

Culture Minister Elizabeta Kanceska-Milevska said that more that 8.000 concerts, performances at more than 15 languages, 60 albums – these are basic contour of the uniqueness that make Esma Redzepova exceptional.

Esma Redzepova thanked for the award to her management company and the government for making efforts the work of the artists to be valued.

Esma Redzepova-Teodosievska is the third holder of the highest recognition in the field of culture, after well-known artists Simon Trpcevski, which was first winner and Mancevski, who won the title last year.
